Matcha Latte

A simple matcha latte recipe with easy steps for making a smooth, creamy, cafΓ©-style drink at home. Made with sifted matcha, hot water, and milk of your choice, it can be enjoyed hot or iced for a refreshing and balanced everyday drink.

This recipe keeps the process easy to follow while helping you create a vibrant latte with rich flavor, gentle energy, and a comforting feel in every sip.

Ingredients: Matcha, Milk, Honey and Water.

Step 1: Heat water.

Don’t use boiling hot water. I use an electric kettle to set the water temperature to 175Β°F. Or, simmer water on the stovetop.

Step 2: Froth hot milk and honey.

In an electric milk frother, heat and froth milk and honey.Β

If you don’t have an electric milk frother, you can get cafe-quality froth by simmering milk and honey on the stovetop then pouring that hot milk into a French press. Move the plunger on the lid up and down until milk doubles in volume.

Step 3: Sift matcha into a bowl.

Sift matcha with a mesh strainer to prevent clumps. This makes it easier to whisk.

Step 4:Add a splash of hot water and mix to make a matcha paste.

This is my secret to making matcha easily. I make a matcha paste first so that I can easily whisk it with a bamboo whisk.

Step 5: Add more hot water to the matcha paste.

Use a matcha whisk and vigorously move it up and down, in a β€œW” shape. Don’t swirl the matcha in circles since that doesn’t create enough friction in the water to break apart the matcha.

Step 6: Pour frothed milk into a cup then pour in whisked matcha.

Enjoy your Matcha Latte!

Matcha tends to clump

Always add the water first before the matcha. It’s important to shake the matcha with water vigorously to break up any clumps.Β

Use unsweetened matcha

Make sure the matcha you’re using isn’t sweetened since it won’t layer on top of the milk.

No need for a matcha whisk if you shake

It’s easier to shake matcha and water together than whisking cold water into matcha. There’s no need to sift the matcha if you shake vigorously.

Matcha is meant to be had with something sweet

Traditionally, matcha whisked in hot water is served with wagashi, a sweet Japanese confection. So it’s no wonder adding something sweet to an iced matcha latte makes it taste even better.
